Thought it may be interesting to look back on the group B rally cars, fire spitting monsters which kept so many fans in awe. After the very tragic deaths of Henri Toivonen and his co driver Sergio Cresto, the time had come to slow down them down. Group B cars were spawn from new rules that gave virtually unrestricted development particularly with engines and transmissions, cars produced between 400 and 590 bhp,Audi,s Quatrro S1 could accelerate on gravel to 60mph in under 3 seconds.
Lancia,s Delta S4 went around Estoril with a lap time fast enough to put it 6th or 7th in the Portuguese GP of that year,to put that in perspective Piquet qualified 6th in a Williams Honda,Rosberg 7th in a TAG McLaren. Formidable, frighteningly fast and possibly dangerous at times, they remain truely great rally cars. Todays are little mice in comparison to these nasty cats.
